I found my purpose when I figured this out…

As soon as I became a mom, I knew I could never work the same way again. For years I did “good work” – some would say it was purpose-driven, but whose purpose was I driving? I worked with entrepreneurs and social enterprises who were truly changing the world, but I longed to see individual lives be changed.

I always felt like there was a little part of me that knew something was missing. For years I had told myself I wanted to know my purpose, but it always felt out of reach [Start your purpose journey here.]

In the five years of being coached, I had side-stepped every attempt to discover my unique purpose. I had come to the point where I thought everyone else could have a purpose except for me.  I discovered the only reason why it was out of reach: I didn’t take that first step.

What I didn’t realise at the time was that my first step had a wave of energy behind it that propelled me forward. One step turned into many more, and it was as if the steps only appeared as I walked forward.

It was during this period of discovery when I understood the true power of coaching: With a coach, truly anything is possible. What is necessary in order to unlock this power is to say “yes.”  Yes to possibility, yes to challenges, yes to discomfort, yes to failure, and yes to so much more.

My life coach saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself.  Like many others, I love focusing on my weaknesses but can’t even see my strengths.  When others tell me what my strengths are, I tend to discount them.  Without a coach, I would be lost in a cycle of perpetual fixing.  With a coach, I can see an ocean of possibility.

Through this coaching, I grew to become comfortable with discomfort.  Over a 10-year period, I had made four international moves, and I thought that made me a pro at discomfort.  But what it did make me a pro at was moving and acclimating to cultures.  I can honestly say that some of the challenging questions my coach offered were more uncomfortable than an around-the-globe move.  In fact, they shifted my world off its axis.

Quickly, my deep desire to see transformation in others became undeniable. As I took steps forward, I realised that one-on-one transformation was where I would find ultimate fulfillment.  I had come to trust the coaching process and appreciate the incredible growth that could happen in only 45 minutes.

Eventually, I couldn’t help but think that maybe I could be a guide to other people’s journeys to finding their unique purpose. I now get to take all my adventures and experiences and partner with my coaching clients as they take their first step.

Maybe you can identify with what I went through.  Perhaps you have that same gnawing feeling of lying in bed awake at night – unfulfilled.  You know that God has put you on this earth for a reason, and yet you still have no idea what that is or how to discover what it is.
